new windmill design



A new windmill design by inventor Kevin Friesth will be contructed in the summer in Iowa, according to Smartplanet.com.  the new design is revolutionary as it doesn't have blades  like the current designs but it is a high tower that harnesses the energy of the wind that passes through it.

funded by an investment capital company, Friesth hopes to generates 10 mw of power with his honey comb design windmills. if successful it will hopefully propagates this technology and becomes the standard in wind energy industry.

The state of New Jersey seems to be on the forefront of harnessing renewable energy through windmills with at least three companies signifying interest in projects of building windmills in the atlantic. The atlantic windmills initiative is projected to harness 20 gigawatt of power creating tens of thousand of jobs by the year 2020.

Leaf: Car of the year

Nissan Leaf was just named as Europe's Car of the Year 2011. The award given by 57 automotive journalist from 23 countries is an affirmation for Nissan. With a good price and a performance that can match many conventional cars, the Leaf is getting praises. The award is first for an electric vehicle.

Google Earth 3D Trees

Google has updated its Google Earth, with improve street view and it now comes with trees.

Cream

After Four Loko, next comes Cream, an alcohol induced whipping cream that's good for coffee or deserts. Its 30-proof and comes in different flavors including chocolate, cherry, raspberry and caramel.

Aging Reversed

Scientist have reverses aging of mice lacking from telomerase enzyme. Telomerase enzyme contributes in some disorder that results in early aging. The mice went back health went telomerase was replaced according to the journal Nature.

Wikileaks

Wikileaks releases another set of documents, this time diplomatic cables from the US state department and its embassies across the globe. The documents dates back from 1966 up to February this year. The US government was reported to have warned its allies about some embarassing details. Wikileaks got its document, it is said, from an army private Bradley Manning working at SIRPnet, a secure military network, who downloaded reams of document from the network.

Atlantic windmills

US regulators are exploring ways that would allow more windmills in US waters in the atlantic. Currently, only one windfarm exist in US waters off the coast of Massachusetts and it took over a decade before it was approved. Secretary Salazar of the Interior hopes it will jumpstart the use of renewable energy. Estimates have it that the atlantic have a potential of 1000 gigawatt of wind power.

Happy meals

A San Francisco ordinance banning happy meals with toys survives a veto by the city's mayor. The ban is to ensure the kids will not be turn on by the toys that comes with a happy meals purchase. The ordinance also seeks a healthier  happy meals or be remove from the menu. The city is the first to ban happy meals.

North Korea

North Korean military fired artillery shells on a South Korean island just across its border. It is said that the highly provocative action has the go-ahead signal from Kim jung un, son and successor of Kim jong il. Two marines were killed in the shelling and dozens of residential houses were set on fire. The civilians took covered in the bunkers following announcement from a loudspeaker.

The FCC encourages that the 911 emergency system be able to handle text messaging. It points out that 72 % of americans use text messaging and that almost 70% percent of calls made to 911 where from mobile phones. The FCC will conduct a proceeding in december to know the public's opinion on the next generation 911 system.

Nissan Leaf

Nissan will begin selling its electric car Leaf by december with a price tag of around $33000. Nissan claimed that it can go the equivalent of 99 mpg with a range of 73 miles on a fully charged battery. Estimated yearly cost for electricity use is $571.

Philantropist helps food bank with $5 million donation

Capital Area Food Bank says William Conway donated $5 million to them allowing them to double their capacity. Conway, whose donation is  the biggest by an individual in the Washington DC area, made the donation after having a chat with the homeless and jobless folks outside his office. Conway is co founder of Carlyle Group and is listed by Forbes as a billionaire.

Google launches a new book to help people understands the internet much better. Apparently Google made a survey last year to gauge the public's knowledge about the internet and they found out that a lot of people does not know much about the internet. For example, less than 10 percent of those asked know what a browser is. With this book, Google tries to explain to the layman all basic things about the internet. Loko no more

Oregon state had ban alcohol mixed with caffeine sold in cans. This after an FDA ruling. Popular among young adults who wants to get drunk quickly and cheaply, it gives the drinker a sense of alertness even when they are already drunk. People are already stocking up supply in anticipation of the ban.

windows is 25

Microsoft is celebrating the 25th year since the release of windows 1.0. The operating system powering most of the world's computer is that old. It didn't come easy though, with DOS still around windows didn't take off until 1990's with windows 3.0. Now we got windows 7 and no. 8 is in the works. Time has changed, not only that it runs pc's, nowadays it also runs smartphones. But along with that it got competition from open source. The competition are getting better and technology is moving faster than ever. Will windows see the next 25 years?

blue moon

Look up the sky tonight and see the full moon, its a blue moon. No, the moon didn't turn blue, its actually a rare occurrence to have a 4 full moon in a season. The current one is the third full moon making it a blue moon. Some defines blue moon as a full moon happening twice in a month like what happens in december of 1999. Still others defines it as the third full moon of 4 in a season which is what we are having right now. Go see it, its a rare event, once in a blue moon.
